Drama Prime Time Report – August 19th~21st

Kuroki Meisa & Shirota Yu in "Jiu" (TV Asahi)
This weekend was completely dominated by NTV’s annual “24 Hour Television” special on-air marathon, including the very well-received special drama that sidelined “Don Quixote” on Saturday.
First of all, let’s take a look at the Friday ratings.
Fuji TV’s special drama at 9~10pm didn’t receive a lot of attention, but unfortunately, their regular drama “Ikemen desu ne” (TBS)  went downhill again by 1.0%. Although it is a remake of a Korean drama, it’s too soon to say that the drop in ratings was the result of the (then-impending) protest against Fuji TV’s overexposure of Korean media and artists.
The Friday night crime drama “Jiu” (TV Asahi) once again had to make way for a special baseball show and aired 30 minutes later than usual. Its ratings are still very high for the midnight slot, but hopefully, they’ll improve once it moves up to 11pm again. Meanwhile, “Ouran High School Host Club” (TBS) once again climbed over the 3.0% rating.
The seventh episode of “Yuusha Yoshihiko to Maou no Shiro” (TV Tokyo) was hilarious as usual, and featured many comedians this time, including King of Comedy.
So many kiss and/or bed scenes this weekend -- "Ouran Host Club" (TBS)
On Saturday, NTV finally began their much-anticipated 24-hour-long TV marathon called “24 Hour Television 34 Ai wa Chikyu wo Sukuu“. It’s the 34th time in the network’s history. While we won’t focus too much on the network’s general ratings this weekend, we have to shift our attention towards the very touching drama special, “Ikiteru Dake de Nankurunaisa“.
Starring Kanjani8’s Murakami Shingo and actress Tanaka Rena. “Ikiteru Dake de Nanukurnaisa” is based on a true-life story. Considering how it’s also a tearjerker, no one even thought about switching the channel while it played. The drama gained it an incredible viewership rating of 22.2%.
Surprisingly, the big TV special on NTV motivated a lot of people to watch more TV in general. No other network really lost much in viewership ratings; in fact, most of them even saw a rise in ratings compared to the previous Saturday.
Horikita Maki was one of the main personalities for "24 Hour TV" (NTV)
The Sunday continued with the TV marathon, which reached its climax from 7pm to 9pm. Fortunately, it didn’t damage NHK’s taiga drama “Gou” any further, but the other variety shows had nothing to offer against the strong presence of NTV. Most viewers didn’t even switch the channel once it was over, and continued to watch the popular variety show “Gyoretsu no Dekiru Horitsu Sodanjo“.
The two dramas that aired in the same time slot — “Hanawake no Yon Shimai” (TBS) and “Hanazakari no Kimitachi e” (Fuji TV) — remarkably almost didn’t lose any viewers. At least the mentioned demonstration against Fuji TV that day didn’t reflect on the shows’ ratings.

NHK, TBS and TV Tokyo usually don’t disclose the ratings for their shows on a regular basis, therefore they won’t be included in the list below. Certain dramas or drama specials that aired on those channels and might lack ratings are still included with a ??.?% rating. This doesn’t mean that the ratings were too low to recorded.
Improvements and declines will be illustrated with the use of several icons. The colors and the numbers indicate how much the ratings have changed.
An orange color means almost no change, while a red color means the ratings dropped, and a green color means the ratings improved.
