Japan Box Office Report – September 17th/18th

"Battle: Los Angeles" / "Unfair: The Answer" / "Tantei wa BAR ni Iru"
Just by looking at the box office ranking you can really tell that it was a long weekend in Japan. Half of the movies from last weekend’s ranking were replaced by new ones. The lingering summer heat over Tokyo also literally forced people to escape into the cool theaters.
First place already marks the first new entry in the ranking, and with “Unfair: The Answer“, starring Shinohara Ryoko, it actually was a Japanese production that became the big winner of the long weekend. It has been four years since the first “Unfair” movie, but 235,676 people remembered that there were still some unanswered questions left over from the first movie. This result translates into a nice revenue of 313,156,700 Yen (4.1 million USD). The prequel was more popular, but that shouldn’t stop it from reaching the 2 billion Yen mark in the near future as well.
Second place opened the rather simple military-alien-invasion flick, “Battle: Los Angeles“, that was postponed due to the Tohoku earthquake in March. 138,082 people were attracted by the action and not put off by the very bad reviews from the rest of the world. With a opening-weekend revenue of 173,642,700 Yen (2.27 million USD) it’s probably going to aim for the 1 billion Yen mark.
The fourth new movie opened in at sixth, “Spy Kids: All The Time In The World In 4D“. It grossed 109,867,900 Yen (1.44 million USD), which is far worse than the previous movies in the series. The third movie, “Spy Kids 3-D” (2003) still remains the most-successful part of the series.
The American movie “Sanctum“, which was also delayed due to the earthquake, opened on seventh place. It grossed 96,929,900 Yen (1.27 million USD).
Last but not least, it was a South Korean movie that became the fifth new entry this weekend. It has been a while since a South Korean movie made it into the top 10 of the Japanese box office chart, but thanks to the current craze and the superb performance of actor Won Bin, “The Man From Nowhere” was able to celebrate just that despite only opening at 77 screens. 29,868 people went to see this movie, ranking it on the ninth place with a revenue of 38,253,600 Yen (501,236 USD).
Trailers for the new Japanese movies can be found after the ranking!
