Popular idol group AKB48 along with Terry Ito have been chosen as “Kohaku supporters” for NHK’s annual music show on New Year’s Eve “NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen.” To commemorate this, they made an appearance at a special press conference held on October 6th. Though AKB48 has performed on Kohaku three times in the past, this will be their first time to take part as a “Kohaku supporter.”
Member, Takahashi Minami commented, “We visited the devastated areas five times, and realized the power of songs. So, I would like to send it out to people all over Japan.” Maeda Atsuko also said, “It’s an honor to be able to participate in this way. I will do my best to support, and live up the Kohaku.” Shinoda Mariko stated, “I’ve been thinking what we could do after the earthquake. I would like to send out our power and energy.”
AKB48 was chosen as a supporter because they would be able to give the appeal of Kohaku to all ages along with extra appeal to the younger generation. With this, they are the first “Kohaku supporter” as a group.
On the other hand, this will be the fourth consecutive year for Terry Ito to be the supporter since his first back in 2008. He said, “This year’s Kohaku will be very special. All the singers will perform putting their lives into it. I would like to strongly support the Kohaku.”
It was also announced that the theme of this year will be “Ashita wo Utaou. (Let’s sing for tomorrow).” It is to make 2011/12/31 as “the day to take the first step like 123″, and make it a positive show in order to step forward to a bright tomorrow.
“The 62nd NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen” will air from 7:15 pm ~ 11:45 pm on the New Year’s Eve.
