“Fast Five” finally opened in Japan, “Dog x Police” just barely missed the top three, and “Hayabusa” has landed in fifth place.
It wasn’t much of a surprise that “Fast Five” easily claimed the top position in the box office chart. There was an advanced screening last weekend, where the movie already had a revenue of 280 million Yen (3.65 million USD), but unfortunately that didn’t count for the weekly charts. This weekend, the movie officially opened and collected another 216,916,100 Yen (2.8 million USD). In total it already grossed over 500 million Yen (6.5 million USD).
“Moteki” was able to defend its second place position and broke through the 800 million Yen (10.4 million USD) mark, while “Unfair: The Answer” dropped down to third place, with an overall revenue of 1.5 billion Yen (19.5 million USD) so far.
Ichihara Hayato and Toda Erika’s movie “Dog x Police: Junpoku no Kizuna” just missed out a spot inside the top three. More than 130,000 people watched it on its first weekend, resulting in a revenue of around 150 million Yen (1.9 million USD).
Many of you might also be surprised that the much-anticipated movie “Hayabusa“, starring Takeuchi Yuko and Nishida Toshiyuki, didn’t gross enough for a place in the top three either. However, it should be noted that the weekend ticket prices have been considerably low for this movie. Apparently they are expecting to make a lot of money during the weekdays, since it’s actually targeting an older audience.
