It was a turbulent weekend for film fans in Japan with the final screenings at the ‘24th Tokyo International Film Festival‘, but the regular openings were also well-attended. All top three spots on the Japanese box office chart was replaced this weekend.
Of course, it was Mitani Koki who claimed the top spot with his fifth feature-length film, “Suteki na Kanashibari” (“Once in a Blue Moon“). The unique story, portrayed by an amazing ensemble of great actors, attracted 390,102 people over the two days. This translates into a decent opening-weekend-revenue of over 500 million Yen (6.4 million USD).
Mitani’s previous films, “The Magic Hour“, started on a similar level and barely missed the 4 billion Yen (51.1 million) mark. The film before that, “The Uchoten Hotel“, had a better start and reached 6 billion Yen (76.6 million USD) in the end. “Suteki na Kanashibari” will probably reach or even break through the 4 billion.
If you are dying to see Mitani’s new film, you should definitely mark November 5th in your calender. On that day, Fuji TV is going to air a special spin-off drama, “Suteki na Kakushidori“. It features the same cast you can see in the movie and was written by Mitani himself. However, the special is set in a hotel similar to “The Uchoten Hotel”.
Secondly, “The Three Musketeers” still attracted 204,938 moviegoers. With a revenue of over 300 million Yen (3.85 million USD) on its opening weekend, it’s expected to surpass at least the 1.5 billion Yen (19.76 million USD) mark.
The new “Suite Precure” anime opened on third place and achieved a revenue of 197,418,400 Yen (2.6 million USD).
The top five contains another new start with “Source Code“, that still managed to gross around 88 million Yen (1.17 million USD).
Furthermore, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” reached the milestone of 2 billion Yen (25.55 million USD), while “Moteki” is on the verge of achieving the same feat.
As usual, you can check out the trailers for all the new Japanese movies below the ranking!
