The box office ranking for the weekend is out and unsurprisingly “Harry Potter” managed to secure its first place position for the second week. In fact, the top 3 were all able to repeat last week’s success and block out all the newcomers.
More than 460,000 people saw the final chapter in the “Harry Potter” saga, earning it another 680 million Yen (8.7 million USD). After 10 days, its revenue already adds up to 3.9 billion Yen (50.3 million USD). It already broke the 3 billion Yen mark on Thursday, seven days after its release, creating a new record for the franchise.
The double “Pokémon” package grossed more than 1.3 billion Yen (17.1 million USD) after nine days, with the white version still being more popular with a revenue share of 53%.
Miike Takashi’s live-action adaption of the famous anime series “Nintama Rantaro“, starring child actor Kato Seishiro among others, was the strongest new contender for a place in the top 3, but it fell short behind Studio Ghibli’s “Kokuriko-zaka Kara“. On fourth place opened the new movie starringSato Ryuta and Aso Kumiko, “Rock – Wanko no Shima“.
The top 3 won’t have it that easy next weekend, because “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” will finally open in Japanese cinemas and let’s not forget about “Cars 2” and all its promotion thanks to techno-pop-trio “Perfume“. Nicolas Cage’s “Season of the Witch” also has a chance to attract some viewers as well, not to mention Japan also has to offer a new “Naruto” movie. It will be an interesting weekend indeed.
Check out the trailers of all the new Japanese movies below the ranking!
