Japan Box Office Report – December 10th/11th

"Kaibutsu-kun" / "Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider" / "Real Steel"

For the weekend of December 10th and 11th, “Kamen Rider” took over the box office chart, followed by new entries “Real Steel” and “Genji Monodatari“.
The new “Kamen Rider” feature-length movie, “Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Fourze & OOO: Movie War Mega Max” attracted 333,200 people over the weekend and debuted in first place. It grossed 378,422,200 Yen (4.86 million USD), which was a slightly better result than the two most recent movies in the series, “Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider OOO & W Featuring Skull: Movie War Core” and “Kamen Rider OOO Wonderful: The Shogun and the 21 Core Medals“.
“Kaibutsu-kun” was beaten by “Kamen Rider” this weekend, but it’s still doing great at the box office. A total of 1,200,000 saw the movie already, resulting in a cumulative revenue of over 1.6 billion Yen (20.55 million USD). The threshold of 2 billion should get broken by the upcoming weekend.
American movie “Real Steel” opened on 3rd place. As usual for Western movies, it already opened prior to the weekend, but the weekend box office chart only counts the results of Saturday and Sunday. During those two days, 176,254 people went to theaters to see the movie, allowing it to earn a revenue of 225,279,650 Yen (2.89 million USD).
The anime “K-On!” dropped down to 4th place. Its total revenue is currently at 691,086,400 Yen (8.87 million USD).
Menawhile, the much-anticipated new adaption of “Genji Monodatari“, starring Ikuta Toma, Nakatani Miki, and more, only opened on 5th place. Attracting only 128,825 people and creating a revenue of 163,760,300 Yen (2.1 million USD) is a disappointing result reminiscent of last year’s “Norwegian Wood“, which also failed at the box office chart despite the positive comments prior and during its screening in theaters.
Next weekend, the top position will be challenged by “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol“.

Japan Box Office Report – December 3rd/4th

"K-On!" / "Kaibutsu-kun" / "The Adventures of Tintin"

The second consecutive box office win for “Kaibutsu-kun“, “K-On!” coming in at second place and “Tintin” rounding out the top three.

This weekend, “Kaibutsu-kun” grossed 449,791,950 Yen (5.78 million USD), which was only a drop of 23% compared to the opening-weekend revenue. In total it already grossed 1.2 billion Yen (15.4 million USD) and should aim for an overall revenue of 4 billion Yen.

The movie adaption of popular ‘moeblob’ anime “K-On!” opened in at second place, attracting a whooping 237,817 people, despite its rather small exposure with only 137 screens. With 316,310,450 Yen (4 million USD), the opening-weekend revenue couldn’t be any better for the anime. Moreover, it also was the strongest first weekend of all movies distributed by Shochiku this year. 1.5 billion or even 2 billion should not be beyond its reach.

“The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” wasn’t able to beat the anime, even though this one opened at a total of 895 screens. It recorded 148,697 sold tickets, which translates to a revenue of 219,508,750 Yen (2.8 million USD). Definitely not the best result for a Steven Spielberg film in Japan.

“Suteki na Kanashibari” dropped down to fourth place. It already crossed over 3.5 billion Yen (45 million USD), but it will need another 800,000,000~900,000,000 Yen in order to catch up with “Kokuriko-zaka Kara” and become the most successful Japanese movie of 2011.

Coming in at the fifth spot, “RAILWAYS 2: Ai wo Tsutae Rarenai Otona-tachi e” also basically opened this weekend. However, the people living in the prefecture of Toyama already got to see it before everyone else in Japan, thus it can’t be marked as a new entry. This weekend, it attracted 82,707 people nationwide and grossed 89,878,400 Yen (1.1 million USD).

The newly formed top three will have to defeat their ranks against various big releases next week, including “Real Steel“, “Kamen Rider“, and “Genji Monogatari” (The Tales of Genji).

Japan Box Office Report – November 26th/27th

"Suteki na Kanashibari" / "Kaibutsu-kun" / "Kaiji 2"

There are only two new entries in the top ten this weekend, “Kaibutsu-kun” and “Happy Feet Two“.

The movie adaption of the drama “Kaibutsu-kun“, starring Arashi’s Ohno Satoshi, took the box office chart by storm. 431,093 people went to see the movie over the weekend, resulting in an amazing first-weekend revenue of 581,038,150 Yen (7.46 million USD).

Out of all those people, 75% decided to see the 3D version rather than the non-3D version of the movie. Moreover, it should be noted that “Kaibutsu-kun” exceeded the first-weekend result of now second place, “Suteki na Kanashibari“, by 15%. However, the late start might make it difficult to compete for the title of the most successful Japanese movie of 2011. The expected total revenue of over 4 billion Yen (51.36 million USD) should be able to make up for lost title.

Meanwhile, “Suteki na Kanashibari” already mobilized more than 2.5 million people and cleared the 3 billion Yen (38.52 million USD) mark. “Kaiji 2” dropped down to third place. This means that people at movie distributor Toho can give themselves a pat on the back again for claiming the top three of the box office chart once again this year.

“Moneyball“, in at the fourth position, is still going strong as well and could actually reach the 1 billion Yen (12.84 million USD) mark sooner or later.

As already mentioned, “Happy Feet Two” was the second new entry in the top ten this weekend. The animated movie attracted 40,750 people and grossed 54,031,300 Yen (693,869 USD). You just can’t get a lot of Japanese people to watch an animated CG movie, unless you’re a company called Pixar.
