"Moteki" / "Unfair: The Answer" / "Tantei wa BAR ni Iru"
It was the second long weekend in a row for the Japanese and the first fall weekend of 2011.
Distributor Toho were the ones who led the first fall box office chart by claiming the top two spots. You might think that this would be the norm, but the last time they were able take the top two places was in May with “Gaku” and a new “Meitantei Conan” movie.
This time they are leading the ranking with “Unfair: The Answer“, that maintained its title from last weekend. It’s still standing firm in its second weak and already broke through the 1 billion Yen (13 million USD) mark. The first movie in the series made a total revenue of 2.7 billion Yen (35 million USD), and it looks like this one will be just as successful.
The newcomer in the second slot this weekend was taken by quirky romantic comedy “Moteki“, starring Moriyama Mirai and four well-known actresses as his four, slightly abusive, love interests. It was a great first weekend for this movie, attracting 176,525 people and making a revenue of 245,780,400 Yen (3.2 million USD), which is more than what “Unfair: The Answer” made this weekend. Together with the Friday numbers, it almost made 389 million Yen (5.1 million USD).
“Tantei wa BAR ni Iru” is still in third place and slowly approaching the 1 billion Yen mark. Meanwhile, “Spy Kids: All The Time In The World In 4D” was able to improve by one rank.
The movie adaption of “Second Virgin“, starring Suzuki Kyoka, managed to come out on the seventh place. It opened on 50 fewer screens than “Moteki”, but that doesn’t excuse its unsatisfying revenue of only 52 million Yen (680,000 USD). Mukai Osamu’s new movie, “Bokutachi wa Sekai wo Kaeru Koto ga Dekinai.“, even opened on 100 less screens than “Second Virgin” and still made 50 million Yen (654,000 USD). However, neither of them can really be counted as a success.
This week “Fast Five” is going to open in Japanese cinemas, and just by looking at the numbers from the advanced screening of the movie this past weekend (280 million Yen), it’s most-likely going to claim the crown in the next box office chart.
Trailers for the new Japanese movies can be found after the ranking! This time there are a lot of new movies, so don’t forget to check them all out!
