Japan Box Office Report – August 27th/28th

"Harry Potter 8" / "Kamisama no Karute" / "Kung Fu Panda 2"
The powerhouse that is “Harry Potter” was dethroned from the top spot, and this time by a Japanese production.
The movie that dethroned the king was, “Kamisama no Karute“, starring Arashi’s Sakurai Sho and actress Miyazaki Aoi in a touching human drama, that put Japan back on the top for their weekend box office ranking. The debut work of Natsukawa Sosuke, an actual doctor, was given into the hands of director Fukagawa Yoshihiro (“60-sai no Love Letter”, “Byakuyako”, “Yougashi Coin de Rue”) for a much anticipated movie adaption.
It was so anticipated that 239,522 people decided to watch it on its opening weekend, grossing more than 300 million Yen (3.9 million USD) in just two days. According to an online survey, 93% of the audience were women, with half of them being middle and high-school students. 38.4% of them also revealed that they only went to see the movie because of the lead actor Sakurai Sho. It will be difficult to stay a long-lasting hit at the box office chart this way, but it’s expected to at least cross the 2 billion Yen (25 million USD) mark sooner or later.
Not even “Harry Potter” had any magic spell left against the fandom of Arashi and Sakurai in particular. However, they can’t really complain about the success of “Harry Potter” in Japan anyway. The movie is in its seventh week now and added yet another billion yen to its revenue. It’s now at 9 billion Yen (117.3 million USD) with more than 6 million sold movie tickets.
Meanwhile, “Pokémon” and “Kokuriko-zaka Kara” exchanged their ranks again.
Another Japanese movie, “Nichirin no Isan“, based on a novel by Asada Jiro, directed by Sasabe Kiyoshi, and starring actor Sakai Masato, also opened this weekend, but it just missed to rank inside the top 10.
Trailers for “Kamisama no Karute”, “Nichirin no Isan”, and other new Japanese movies can be found after the ranking!
